Mesohippus

Mesohippus is an extinct genus of early horse. It lived some 30 to 40 million years ago from the Middle Eocene to the Early Oligocene. Mesohippus had longer legs than its predecessor and stood about 60 cm tall. It had also lost a toe and stood predominantly on its middle toe,
Like many fossil horses, Mesohippus was common in North America. The U.S. Mesohippus was the first of the three-toed horses and, although only the size of a modern collie dog, was very horselike in appearance. Mesohippus was still a browsing form; its teeth were unsuited to the grazing adopted by later, more advanced horses.
